Musings at the Moonstone Cave

April 23, 2019 by DavidWilsonMFX Leave a Comment

Humboldt County, California

Panoramic crop of view through Moonstone Beach cave's mouth into the night.

We stood in the mouth of the cavern, looking out through a great broken crack in the blackness into the night as if through a window into another world. It fired our imaginations, conjuring mysteries in the night. What is it about caves that stirs us so inside? My thoughts wandered, and stories began to play across my mind as my imagination took me to a time that might have been earlier that day…

Looking Out of Moonstone Cave
Mysteries of the night reveal themselves in the darkness like the secret caves of the mind — if one knows where to look, how to see… On the rugged coast of Humboldt County, California. April 9, 2019.

…Hiking the redwood forests of Humboldt County, California earlier in the afternoon my two companions and I had stumbled onto a stone stairway in the woods. Its worn steps led up a hill and into the goosepen of a great redwood tree. We had all hiked this area before, but none of us had ever seen the stairs or the tree, nor even the hill it was on. I admit I was more than a little confused; I consider myself to have an excellent sense of direction and have never gotten lost in the forest before, but how could I have missed this until now? Were we where we thought we were? My companions were as confused as I.

The stairs seemed ancient, small ledges of rock covered in moss, lichen and fallen debris. They led up into the dark opening at the base of the tree where the redwood opened to accommodate them, widening as though it had been growing around the steps for a thousand years, enticing travelers to enter and explore its mysteries. We accepted the invitation.

The steps climbed up and into the tree’s hollow, and then immediately descended again to vanish into the darkness underground. Why headlamp’s beam revealed the staircase curving out of view in the shadows below us. We looked at each other there at the top of the stairs — to explore, or no? My companions flicked their own headlamps on in answer. Down we went.

Mossy stone steps lead upward into an opening in a great redwood tree.
Imagine, if you will, a stairway to the darkest recesses of your own mind, where the only journey you will make is within, and the only fears you will face are your own. This is a place you cannot find on a map, cannot reach on foot — yet a familiarity of places known hangs about it like the cool Humboldt mists… (thank you, Rod Serling). [This is a composite image of two Humboldt places and only exists in the imagination].

Not far beyond the curve the stairs leveled off to rocky floor. It was rough and uneven, but wide enough for two abreast. Rock fallen from the ceiling and walls littered the floor. The air felt cold and heavy, thick with moisture and the smell of rock and soil, like the very breath of Earth itself.

We had traveled perhaps fifty yards when the path opened onto a circular room, its smooth walls hewn and shaped from the rock. At even intervals around its circumference three more openings in the walls marked where other passages beckoned to us. Our interest was piqued, but though we had headlamps, we were ill-equipped for spelunking and feared getting lost if we explored further. We would return to explore another time.

But upon turning around we found that our corridor branched both left and right. Two of us thought we had arrived via the left tunnel, and the other thought the right. None of us knew. We tried the left first. But it was not the way we had come, for it immediately branched into other tunnels. Yet when we turned around to retrace our steps we were confronted with another Y in the passage. Had it been there before? We would try both tunnels, we thought. But we were never sure we found that intersection again as we were confronted with branch after branch in the path.

Who knows how long we hiked? Or how far, for the cave was a bewildering maze of trails and stone staircases carved into the living rock, and without the ordinary references of daytime we had no sense of the passage of time. We knew only that we were lost in its inky blackness.

In black and white…

When our headlamps dimmed, we conserved batteries by sharing a single light at a time between the three of us. To run out of light would have meant the end. We had no idea where we were or where to go, so we pressed on, hoping to find a way to the surface. Where we could we took stairs or ramps leading upwards, but always it seemed they would turn back downward.

Our final headlamp’s beam was a dimming shadow of itself when a crack in the blackness ahead showed a patch of night sky with stars, and then the lights of civilization broke upon us. Our cave had brought us once again to the open air. We had entered from the Redwood forest early that afternoon, and now it was some time in the night, at the beach.

Stone stairs lead up into an opening in a great redwood tree.
Historical version

…I shook my head, grinning at my own thoughts as my mind returned to the present. I was there again at the Moonstone Beach cave with my companions to take photographs in the North Coast’s night light. What stories had they experienced? But for me the world was normal again. Or seemed to be. I turned around and sent my light back into the cave. One last look, I thought. And there it was, the same old Moonstone Beach cave I’d always known, but I wasn’t sure I was glad.

But where was the car?…

Pre-dawn snow at the Carson Mansion the morning of Pre-dawn snow at the Carson Mansion the morning of February 23, 2023.
Planning (and hoping) to photograph the rare sight of the Carson Mansion in the snow the following morning, I’d set my alarm for 4:35 AM. But it felt just too cozy in bed when the time came, and I gave myself another 20 minutes ...and it was still real cozy at 4:55.

“If you don’t go out, you won’t bring anything back…” the voice in my head predictably said. I looked outside and the snow was falling fast in big flakes, and I was convinced.

I’d hoped the snow would to be thick on the ground at the mansion, and if it were I wanted get a long shot down the road of the mansion with snow covering the streets and no car tracks. I even thought I could do one in which I would be a lone figure walking across the snowy intersection in the photo, like my own snowy Old Town Abbey Road. I was there early enough for no car tracks, but the snow wasn’t thick on the road or in the trees like I'd hoped, so I went in closer and photographed other angles. It was 6:04 AM when I photographed this. Eureka, Humboldt County, California. February 23, 2023. ❄️🌴

Once the sun came up there were lots of people out photographing. I stopped at one of the turnouts on the Samoa Peninsula to catch some snowy dunes and surf in the early sun, and spotted a mom, dad, and infant out doing the same. They were having fun taking turns photographing each other with their phones, so I offered to take a photograph of all of them with their phone.

“You look like you might be expensive…” the dad said. I had a camera and tripod out and was wearing a pack.

“Hell, no!” I cried, and we laughed. After I took photos of them with their phone, they took some of me with my phone. It was a good morning..

FIRE HAZARD — this was nearly instantaneous. Crys FIRE HAZARD — this was nearly instantaneous. Crystal Balls in the sun are FIRE HAZARDS! Don’t set it down in the sun outside OR in the house.
When you set your crystal ball down in the sun, it is just like a magnifying glass — FIRE! Be careful, because anywhere you set it down in the sun, it will burn the surface it is on, whether outside or indoors on a shelf.

It’ll burn your hand as you hold it in the sun, too — it got me a little, but I was fast.

This was an old tinder dry redwood board.

I wonder how many accidental fires start with a crystal ball carelessly set down in the sun…

The moral: when you have hot balls, be careful!

That used to be the title of a column in “National Geographic World” magazine; I loved the magazine and that section growing up. Single exposure light painting, no compositing. This is a chess board I made in high school in... I forgot which grade it was. Somehow the checkerboard pattern seems attractive in a surrealistic sort of way to me, and painting it in with light using my flashlight shining, alternately, through Red plastic, then Green, then Blue, added to the surreal quality of it. My idea was two environments: Blue vs Warm, the black pieces on the blue side, and the white pieces on the warm side, separated not only by the colors, but by virtue of the fact that the white pieces were only in focus within the crystal ball. The color variations are the result of the different colored light (from the plastic filters) painted into the scene at different times during the exposure. For some reason, I couldn't stop thinking about "Queen's Gambit".

I posted the uncropped version of this a few days ago, but I dislike the way Instagram’s format cramps horizontal shots into such a narrow space. If only the app allowed for tilting a device (phone, iPad) sideways, then we could see horizontal photos in all their glory. How odd for a “photo sharing” app to make it so difficult to enjoy anything but vertical and square crops. #instagramsuggestion : allow rotating the device to view photos horizontally. I don’t favor this crop, but it fills Instagram’s ultralimited space better than the uncropped version.
