Imagine, if you will, a journey down an Avenue through corridors of towering redwoods. Between them the stars hang motionless in the sky, while streaking past below fly the yellow dashes of the road. This is a road you know… you think. But this is night will end in another destination, and what you find is for you alone…
Redwood Highway Para-Symmetrical Mandala
Each of us is alone inside our own thoughts. We struggle mightily to express ourselves so that others will understand us, and many of us attempt to understand others, but we are always alone in our thoughts. Perhaps it is that innate aloneness that leads to us feeling separate from Nature. Oh, but we are so far from being separate from Nature; that is an illusion. We are not separate from nature, we are but a tiny part of Nature. We are not large, we are small. Earth itself is not large, it is minute. It is a mote in a sea of Nature so large that we call it the Universe. Hack and hew though we might, we will never tame the Universe. It will remain long after we’re gone.

A moonlit oak tree watches the passage of the stars on their nightly journey across the sky near the Kneeland Airport in the hills east of Eureka in Humboldt County, California. I parked on a turnout and photographed the tree from the shoulder of the road. The animation shows a little star motion as it alternates between longer exposure and a shorter exposure photographs moments apart. The stars near the bottom of the image are in the south, arcing across the sky as they travel around the southern axis below the horizon. The stars at the top of the photograph are traveling in a wide circle around the northern axis, which is out of view above and to the left. The area between the southern arcs and the northern arcs is the celestial equator. Because we are north of Earth’s equator, the celestial equator is in the southern half of the sky; were we on the equator, it would extend from east to west directly overhead.
